Job description
Applications are invited for a skilled and motivated bioinformatics programmer to join the Imperial BRC Genomics Facility on the Hammersmith Campus of Imperial College London.
The post holder will implement, maintain and operate data management and processing pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data generated by the facility. He/she will work closely with other bioinformaticians and laboratory staff in the facility and with staff at the Imperial High Performance Computing Service and Data Centre. The postholder will be responsible for the management, quality control, processing and dissemination of NGS data generated by the Genomics Facility. He/she will implement and maintain a data management system for NGS data that integrates with existing work flows for NGS data analysis. The post holder will assist in the administration of computing infrastructure and maintenance of software to store and process NGS data and associated information. He/she will support the development and maintenance of web-based applications to facilitate dissemination, visualisation and interpretation of large-scale genomic data sets. The specific duties of the post holder are as follows:- To assist with the requirements analysis for the implementation of a data management and processing pipelines for NGS data.
- To develop, deploy, and document software for the automation of processing, quality control and dissemination of NGS data making the best use of current bioinformatics methods, algorithms and knowledge.
- To ensure the smooth running of the facilities computational resources through regular communication with staff at the Imperial High Performance Computing Service and Data Centre.
- To assist in the administration of computing infrastructure and maintenance of software to store, process and analyse NGS data and associated information.
- To support the development and maintenance of web-based applications for the monitoring of high performance computing work flows, data dissemination, visualisation and interpretation.
- To maintain highly organised and accurate records of all work carried out.
- To take part in research meetings,internal seminars and academic activities of the institute and the College.
- To contribute to publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and to present work at national and international meetings.
Desired skills and experience
Degree:
- A degree, or equivalent, in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a closely related discipline
- Comfortable working in a Unix/Linux environment
- Proficiency in Unix shell scripting
- Demonstrable ability to produce well designed and documented code in Perl, Python or an equivalent scripting language relevant for bioinformatics data processing
- Practical experience with the processing and analysis of large genomic datasets preferably next-generation sequencing datasets
- Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and data standards to process and analyse next-generation sequencing data
- Good understanding of the application of genome technologies and bioinformatics in the context of genomics and genetics
- Practical experience with bioinformatics tools to process and analyse NGS data
- Familiarity with public biomedical information resources such as genome browsers, data repositories and annotation databases
- Experience with programming in Java
- Experience of working in a high performance computing environment
- Experience of working with relational databases
- Knowledge of code versioning and documentation tools
- Experience in the development and maintenance of high performance computing work flows
- Experience in the development and maintenance of web-based applications
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with researchers of all levels in an interdisciplinary environment by written and verbal communication
- Ability to document work and write factual reports on work completed
- Proven organisational skills and ability to plan ahead, set priorities and work to deadlines
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times
- Ability and willingness to learn from training and development activities as required
