Job Description:
The position involves assisting with bioinformatics analysis of two datasets relating to allele-specific DNA replication timing in human embryonic stem cells and in lymphoblastoid cell lines. Analyze human genome sequence data and DNA replication timing data using established computational pipelines, and develop dedicated pipelines specific to this project. Integrate replication timing data with gene expression, chromatin structure, DNA methylation, gene ontology, and other data. Inform the design of follow-up experimental validations deriving from the data analysis. The incumbent will perform research under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and collaborate on projects with other members of the laboratory and with national and international collaborators, train and supervise undergraduate research assistants and graduate rotation students. Present results in lab meetings and in local and regional meetings.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week) 12-month position with possible extension pending available funding and successful performance.

Required Qualifications:

Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 year to 2 years, Associate’s degree, 2 years of college coursework or equivalent; more than 6 months experience in a biology laboratory setting. Highly organized and with strong attention to detail. Experience with programming software such as Matlab, R, Python, shell scripting or similar. Experience analyzing next-generation sequence data and software such as BWA, GATK, Samtools, and similar. Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to work with general supervision as well as part of a research team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or other formal training program of four years or equivalent in Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, computer science or related disciplines. One year or more of experience in a computational biology laboratory. Experience with analysis of sequence variation, DNA copy number and DNA replication timing.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Koren research lab in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics studies DNA replication timing and mutagenesis using predominantly genomic approaches. Specific interests include human variation in DNA replication timing, genetic determinants of DNA replication timing, non-random patterns of mutations along the genome, and epigenomics (www.amnonkoren.com).
