Job Description:
The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology at The University of Chicago seeks to hire a motivated bioinformatician with a background in statistical analysis of large-scale bioinformatics data under the direction of Dr. Sean Pitroda. Analyses will primarily focus on data from next-generation RNA and DNA sequencing, expression profiling, and copy number variation, and the associations between these data and clinical outcomes. The major goal of this position is to provide support for team-based research, which integrates genomic, oncologic, and tumor immunology projects in the laboratory and clinical trials in the department. The candidate is also expected to assist in preparation of manuscripts and presentations. The individual's initiative is highly encouraged and any projects associated with the design of new bioinformatics techniques and/or application of known tools to different scientific and clinical problems will be appreciated. Individual expertise will be encouraged through travel to scientific meetings, publications in peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations, and growth in the academic environment.

Responsibilities:

70%

  • Analysis of next-generation RNA and DNA sequencing, expression profiling, and copy number variation, and the associations between these data and clinical outcomes.
  • The position also requires knowledge of accessing publicly available sequencing and profiling datasets.
20%
  • Design of new bioinformatics techniques and/or application of known tools to different scientific and clinical problems.
10%
  • Organization of data for presentation in weekly lab meetings.
  • Development of new protocols.
  • Generation of written findings for publications.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:

M.S. or Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or a related field required.

Experiences:

  • A minimum of two years of relevant research experience required
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools for analysis and visualization of next-generation sequencing and profiling data required
  • Knowledge of major operational systems (LINUX, Windows, etc.) required
  • Knowledge in mining publicly available sequencing and profiling data required
  • Ability to present data in excellent graphical formats suitable for publications in high-impact journals required
  • Knowledge of R and Bioconductor required; knowledge of Perl and Python preferred
  • Supervisory skills preferred
