The position will have a major public health impact: you will see your in silico work translated to a clinical product. We have developed a statistically rigorous and validated diagnostic method that 'reads' patterns in the immune system by looking at gene expression in whole blood. Our HostDx™ tests report clinically actionable information on the presence, type (bacterial or viral), and severity of infection in patients. Our tests have been extensively validated and published in Science Translational Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, and others. Our first product will be a rapid diagnostic for use in hospitals and clinics. About The Company: Inflammatix, Inc. is a venture-backed startup located in the San Francisco Bay Area that is building novel diagnostics for acute infections and sepsis based on our unique immune biomarkers. Approximately $10 billion / year is spent trying to diagnose acute infections, but current technologies that focus on 'finding the bug' are (1) slow and (2) effective in fewer than 30% of cases. Inflammatix has developed a statistically rigorous, extensively validated diagnostic method that 'reads' the immune system. We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Scientist to help run diagnostic biomarker discovery. The position will have a major public health impact: you will see your in silico work translated to a clinical product. This is a fantastic opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a rapidly growing biotech startup, and as an early employee, part of the job will be strategic input on all aspects of scientific development. Primary Responsibilities:
- Execute and document the development of diagnostic biomarkers and algorithms using large gene expression datasets (microarray, RNAseq/NGS, PCR), under direction of senior scientists.
- Keep a detailed research log and summarize work in research reports and presentations.
- MS degree or equivalent work experience in biomedical informatics, computer science, statistics, or related field(s).
- 3-5 years experience in biotechnology industry or academic research setting.
- Proficiency with R and/or python and Linux operating system
- Familiarity with biological data repositories such as GEO and TCGA.
- Prior work with microarray/RNAseq data, and/or biomarker development, is a plus.
- Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills; organized and efficient.
- Proven interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; excellent time management skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment; able to manage competing priorities.
- Classification: Full-time position.
