Job Description:
The Helix Bioinformatics team is seeking passionate and motivated individuals to join our cross-functional team to develop and apply cutting-edge approaches to processing, analyzing, annotating, and interpreting population-scale human genome sequence data for consumer products. You will work closely with lab operations, engineering, applied genomics, product, and design, to create our world-class genomics platform. As a Bioinformatics Scientist, you will:

  • Support laboratory R&D efforts in a large-scale clinical, CLIA/CAP production environment
  • Develop best-practices for quality assessment, control, and benchmarking of sequencing assays and analysis methods
  • Wrangle large datasets to generate insightful reports
  • Design, implement, and test novel next-generation sequencing analysis methods
Required background:
  • Masters with at least 2 years industry experience or PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics or related field
  • Significant experience in hands-on analysis of next-generation sequencing data
  • Programming experience using scripting languages such as Python and statistical tools such as R
  • Quantitative training with basic understanding of probability and statistics
  • Experience with Linux-based high performance computing environments and/or cloud-based environments
  • Ability to be self-driven and work well together in a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team
  • Keen attention to detail
Ideal candidate will have:
  • Have experience working with human specimen WES or WGS
  • Experience with primary and secondary analysis data formats (BCL, FASTQ, BAM, VCF) and QC metrics (PF, Q30, duplicates, coverage uniformity, etc.)
  • Understanding of the Illumina-based next-generation sequencing wet-lab process
  • Experience developing new methods for analyzing next-generation sequencing data
  • Worked or interacted with wet-lab scientists in clinical lab
  • Basic understanding of SQL
  • Experience with communicating results and concepts to a diverse audience including engineers, laboratory scientists and quality assurance professionals
