Job Description:
The Jackson Laboratory is immediately seeking Computational Scientists/Bioinformatics Analysts/Biostatisticians to join our Computational Sciences group. These positions offer the opportunity to make leading contributions to cutting edge research in mouse genetics, disease biology, and translational research in collaboration with the faculty and genetic resource scientists and clients of The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). Cross campus and industry collaborations are encouraged.

These positions have the primary responsibility of providing statistical and analytical bioinformatics expertise and interpretation in the scientific research programs at the Jackson Laboratory and its collaborative programs. These roles participate in a collaborative bioinformatics program aligned with institutional strategy and direction, and make leading contributions to the cutting-edge projects at The Jackson Laboratory.

Level of position will be determined by the incumbents’ years of bioinformatics research experience, educational background and leadership experience. Characteristic distinctions of higher-level positions include increased ability to work independently, development of in-depth knowledge in selected biological disciplines to analyze and provide expert reasoning to the relevant projects, and competency to provide project and grant application leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the research faculty & genetic resource scientists on projects of wide-ranging complexity across a diverse array of biomedical disciplines (such as cancer biology, aging, immunology, infectious diseases, metabolomics, neural disorders, muscular disorders, stem cell and developmental biology, and statistical genetics & biostatistics)
  • Work with JAX Mice & Services staff to meet the analytical needs of clients and partners
  • Sustain collaborations with the research faculty and staff on both the Farmington, Connecticut and Bar Harbor, Maine campuses; and visit the Sacramento, California facility on a regular basis
  • Working effectively in a team environment with individuals with varying levels of experience
  • Contribute to the drafting of manuscripts and grants
Requirements:
  • MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics or any relevant area
  • Proven track record of “omics” data analysis, statistical genetics & biostatistics, independent collaborative work, and leading contributions to a biological discipline is preferred
  • An In-depth knowledge of, and prior experience with, High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis (DNA Seq, mRNA Seq, ChIP Seq, micro RNA Seq etc), microarray data analysis, experimental design, data integration, algorithm development, development of sequence analysis tools (bioinformatics programming), evaluation of analytical tools and technology, and delivering training to the research community
  • Must have experience in bioinformatics research and demonstrated aptitude and capacity for developing bioinformatics expertise in the niche areas of biological sciences and relevant translational research (especially cancer biology, immunology, precision genetics and statistical genetics)
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and collaborations is key
  • Prior successes in and desire to contribute to team projects on an ongoing basis is a must
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present results to the JAX community, conferences, and workshops
  • Must be continuous learners and proactive creative contributors eager to learn new technologies and science
