Job Description:
We seek an entry-level bioinformaticist / computational biologist to join our team. You will possess a unique hybrid skill set, having: a) a strong background in high-level mathematics (to generate algorithms needed to mine these data sets), b) advanced computer science skills (to encode these algorithms in computational code needed to run the analyses), and c) a sufficient background in the biology being studied (to connect the algorithms/code generated to the relevant biological hypotheses being explored).

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computer sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field and a master or bachelor's degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience working on large biological data sets (e.g. microarray, SNP, proteomics, whole genome sequences; microbiome characterization).
  • Broad experience in using systems biology approach for the interpretation of cellular processes, and/or biomarker discovery. Demonstrated skills in applying/developing/improving machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms for large scale biological data.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas are highly desirable: biological image analysis, metabolic flux analysis, GWAS data analysis, text mining and biological network inference.
  • Extensive programming skills in C/C++, Java, Python, R, and Perl.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

As part of the Global Biotechnology organization, Procter & Gamble’s Bioinformatics team is a group of computational biologists who employ the power of computer-based analytical techniques to explore biological data sets to enable our R&D organization to: 1) develop fundamental understanding of biology related to our business interests, 2) define mechanisms of action needed to provide consumer benefits, 3) identify specific molecules that can deliver these benefits, 4) prepare patent applications to protect intellectual property associated with novel approaches developed to do this work, and 5) support the “credentialing” of this science with external stakeholders (e.g., thought leaders; science editors; consumers of our products). Computational biology/bioinformatics has become a critical component of life science-based discovery work. Such techniques include whole genome sequencing, chip-based gene expression profiling, next-generation RNASeq-based characterization of differential gene expression, metagenomic sequencing of entire microbial communities, etc.
