Job Description:
The Applied Genomics and Biology Business is currently seeking a Bioinformatics Software Developer in Columbus, Ohio to support a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary genomics research team.

This position will support the development of next-generation computational and bioinformatics tools for screening and identification, functional annotation, and characterization of target nucleic acid sequences from microbial and human sources. This position will work collaboratively with biologists and statisticians to develop cutting-edge software products.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Designing and programming software products: with varied system requirements/abilities, as separate installs or server based installs, and with compatibility to allow customers to upgrade to new versions with limited downtime or interference; for massive-scale performance and scalability engineering; with robustness, user feedback, data integrity, functional-programming concepts

• Researching, developing, and evaluating Client computational approaches for nucleic acid sequence analysis, data transfer and analysis pipelines, and downstream analysis and visualization

• Designing UI to client specifications for improved data visualization and style

• Programming static and interactive web apps using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, without frameworks, for all browsers

• Integrating multiple systems using REST API

• Evaluating and integrating community-developed bioinformatics tools

• Supporting data management, computational analysis, and interpretation of large genomic data sets

Job Requirements:

• Strong background in software engineering practices

• Ability to decompose, generalize, simplify, and maintain product consistency

• Proficient with debugging, testing, fixing, planning, estimating, coordinating, and mentoring

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proven ability to work collaboratively with development teams to ensure development cycles are maintained

• proactive approach to problem solving and commitment to achieving quality results on schedule

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or comparable degree with a minimum of three (3) years of software development experience

• Sole US citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment

Desired Qualifications:

• Two years of experience with: multiple languages (e.g. C#, C++, Java, and scripting languages like Perl or Python); bioinformatics software packages (e.g. SAMtools, GATK, bwa, IGV, etc.); cloud computing, parallel computing, and big data; version control systems such as git and TFS

• Familiarity with genomic resources (e.g., RefSeq, Ensembl, dbSNP, DGV, dbVAR, ClinVar, ExAC or UCSC Genome Browser)

• Knowledge of genomics and molecular biology

• Ability to work in a team environment
