Job Description:
The Children's Mercy Hospital ("the hospital"), seeks a Bioinformatics Software Engineer 2 – Genome Center for Kansas City, MO. Requirements: a bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field, and seven years progressive experience in the job offered, a related position in development of statistical analysis or machine learning algorithms utilizing large databases, in programming, or in information technology analysis within the healthcare field. Position also requires the following: programming experience: Linux or other Unix operating system; relational databases; Java or C++; experience with a scripting language (Perl, Ruby, or Python); experience with relevant sequencing analysis tools such as BWA, GATK, SAMtools or related; demonstrated familiarity with public genomic databases such as NCBI/GenBank, UCSC, OMIM, dbSNP; demonstrated familiarity with common bioinformatics data formats such as VCF, BAM, GFF/GTF, BED; experience in the assessment of genetic variation and deleterious effects; demonstrated familiarity with machine learning techniques; and demonstrated familiarity with next-generation sequencing data and technologies. The Bioinformatics Software Engineer 2 – Genome Center will provide programming and support for application systems development and maintenance projects through all phases of development including design, development, deployment, and operations. Assist in the development of molecular biology related systems and databases in support of the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine as well as clinical and research efforts at the hospital. Work closely with genome center staff and faculty in various projects to gather requirements and provide data analysis solutions under the direction of the Director of Informatics - Genome Center. Perform supervised and independent scientific analysis utilizing expertise in analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) and knowledge of best practices. Develop databases and software to assist in clinical and research projects; providing technical application support as appropriate. Meet with internal and external customers to clarify needs in order to provide support through all phases of each project. Utilize available resources within internal and external genomics, bioinformatics and Information Technology communities to expand job knowledge and expertise. Report progress, issues, and project details to management as appropriate.
