Job Description:
The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Computational and Systems Biology at the School of Medicine is seeking a Bioinformatics Specialist in the Carvunis Lab (www.carvunis.com).

The Bioinformatics Specialist will work as a computational biologist who will focus on analyses and management of multi-omics datasets relevant to the study of genomes and molecular network evolution. This position will incorporate a wide range of skills and activities.

The Bioinformatics Specialist will work in close collaboration with experimental scientists to assist their high throughput yeast genetics and genomics projects. This will involve tasks such as designing primer libraries, quantifying fitnesses from dense colony array images or analyzing NGS results. The Bioinformatics Specialist will also carry independent computational research projects involving methods development and/or integration of publically available genomic datasets.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position:

Master’s degree or Ph.D. preferred, however a Bachelor’s degree with additional experience will be considered. Degree in computational biology or equivalent expert knowledge is preferred.

Previous experience working with genomics data is a requirement. An ability to apply Perl/Python, R, and shell scripting in Linux environment is also required. The candidate will be expected to follow best coding practices: issue tracking, source code control, unit testing, and documentation management. Expertise in biostatistics, image analysis, machine learning, and/or database management are desirable assets.
