Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Bioinformatics Project Scientist. The project scientist will work on the development of computational and experimental methodologies for Fluctuation X-ray Scattering (FXS). Research is concentrated on the development of software for the processing of FEL and synchrotron based FXS data and the subsequent analyses of such data. The candidate is expected to expand the developed techniques into related research areas, such as time resolved SAXS and/or powder diffraction. The candidate will be involved in the development and expansion of the underlying theory of FXS, either as a standalone technique or in a hybrid capacity, will aid in its practical deployment in the biological sciences, and collaborate with external researchers in the analyses of experimental results. The position reports to the PI.

What You Will Do:

  • Refine and extend the theoretical foundation of FXS.
  • Develop new FXS theory as part of a ‘hybrid method’.
  • Analyze experimental FXS and Single particle data.
  • Develop and improve experimental protocols on the basis of data analyses.
  • Propose, execute and manage synchrotron and FEL based FXS or related experiments.
  • Take a lead role in collaborations with external researchers on the analyses of FXS and single particle scattering data.
  • Participate in planning efforts of future light source facilities.
  • Develop Python/C++/CUDA based software for automated data processing of FXS data.
  • Develop and maintain units tests for implemented software.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for implemented software.
  • Develop and publish tutorial materials for implemented data analyses pipeline.
  • Work with LCLS and other large scale facilities’ software teams for distribution of developed software.
  • Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook.
  • Summarize experiment results in reports and papers submitted for publication and present analysis results at scientific meetings.
  • Attend and present data at group meetings.
What is Required:
  • Experience in multi-particle, XFEL-based FXS data analyses.
  • Having a sound knowledge of the theoretical basis of FXS.
  • Have a demonstrated track record in developing novel algorithmic and mathematical tools for the analyses of FXS data.
  • Programming experience in Python/C++.
  • Have a working knowledge of the SciPy, Numpy and psana python libraries.
  • Basic skills and understanding of applied mathematics, statistics and scattering theory.
  • Experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment and strong written and verbal communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • PhD in Biophysics, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or a related field.
  • Experience in experimental synchrotron and FEL sciences.
  • Practical knowledge of the CCTBX libraries.
