Job description
The NeuroSeq Project Team at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus is seeking an outstanding bioinformatician or computational biologist with relevant experience in next generation sequencing to develop and implement a robust pipeline for the analysis of RNAseq and ATACseq data, which will enable the Project Team to study the biological significance of differential gene expression and regulation across mouse and fly neuronal cell types. NeuroSeq scientists have measured expression profiles of over a hundred neuronal cell types in these two model systems and continue to expand this dataset. The specialist will develop, test, optimize, and implement standardized RNAseq and ATACseq analysis pipelines to support the goals of the NeuroSeq Project Team and our collaborators. For this staff position, we are seeking a highly qualified candidate whose career goals are aligned with the broader research goals of the NeuroSeq Project Team.
HHMI's Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center near Washington, D.C., where scientists from many disciplines develop and use emerging and innovative technologies to pursue science's most challenging problems. In particular, Janelia is focused on technologies for biological imaging and understanding neural circuits and how they give rise to behavior. Established in 2006, Janelia was modeled after institutes like Bell Labs, with small groups collaborating on high-risk, high-reward, innovative science.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Test, optimize, and implement open source software tools for routine analysis of RNAseq and ATACseq data (e.g. NGS read mapping, feature identification and counting, and data visualization)
- Develop custom software solutions when necessary
- Summarize and communicate results to the NeuroSeq Project Team and collaborators
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, or related discipline
- Experience in NGS data analysis with a proven track record of working in a collaborative team environment
- Experience optimizing software for high performance computing
- Experience with RNAseq is required, and experience with ATACseq, ChIPseq, DNAse-seq or other genomic assays is preferred
- Experience with Python programming language is required, and experience with Perl and shell scripting is preferred
- Experience with common open-source NGS tools is required (e.g. samtools, bowtie/bwa, Picard, RSEM, etc.), and a willingness to explore new tools is preferred
- Strong interest in research subjects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Keeping accurate and organized records of work performed
