Job Summary About the Agency The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees - and is the principal federal funding agency of - the Nation's research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences. The Office of Science manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science. In addition, the Office of Science is the Federal Government's largest single funder of materials and chemical sciences, and it supports unique and vital parts of U.S. research in climate change, geophysics, genomics, life sciences, and science education. The Office of Science manages this research portfolio through six interdisciplinary program offices: Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics. In addition, the Office of Science sponsors a range of science education initiatives through its Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists program. This position is located in the Biological Systems Science Division, Office of Biological and Environmental Research, Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs, Office of Science, Department of Energy. The Office supports basic research in the natural sciences to advance environmental and biological knowledge that promotes national security through improved energy production, development, and use. The Division is responsible for a broad multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research portfolio to develop fundamental biological information and to advance technology in support of DOE’s missions in biology, climate change, and the environment. This includes research focused on the role of plants and microbes in processes related to energy, environmental remediation, and the biological cycling of carbon and nutrients in the environment. The incumbent will serve as scientific and technical authority in computational biology, bioinformatics, metabolic engineering, systems biology modeling and simulation with emphasis on data management and computing infrastructure and has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in these fields on a national and international level.
