Job Description:

Job Summary: Works in support of scientific research in computational biology and bioinformatics using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment designed for scientific research. Works collaboratively with the Investigator, to determine the most suitable computational methods to be used in research. Independently performs scientific investigative procedures requiring application of professional judgment. Interprets experimental results and determine whether they are consistent with experimental goals. Prepares reports of research for presentation or publication.
Principal Responsibilities:
  • Manages laboratory computer hardware and software.
  • Reviews existing hardware and software to insure it meets the needs of the lab.
  • Tests and reviews new equipment to ascertain if it would address needs.
  • Performs complex computer analysis activities of relevant data.
  • Develops software to meet analytical needs of labResolves hardware, software, and/or network problems to insure adequate support to the lab.Administers complex database information.
  • Trains laboratory staff in use of hardware and software.
  • Performs research projects as assigned by the Investigator.
  • May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, network administration, or hardware and software maintenance.
  • Works on or manages projects of where time frame may not be clear and where end results may be uncertain.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree in science and computer technology or equivalent in education and experience AND two year's of related research experience in computational biology and bioinformatics.
  • Technical proficiency and collaborative ability as well as independent thought.
  • In-depth knowledge of multiple areas and of the underlying principles and concepts.
  • In-depth understanding of complex equipment or processes.  Can resolve most problems without assistance or defines assistance required for resolution.
  • Ability to develop innovative processes to achieve goals.   Reviews work activities to determine where new information could improve processes or move projects forward.
  • Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style.
  • Proficient in multiple operating systems.
  • Proficient in multiple software packages.
