Job Description:
The Molecular Biology Department of Massachusetts General Hospital is a member of Harvard Medical School and is known for cutting edge fundamental research. As a member of our Bioinformatics team, you will contribute to the advancement of computational and biomedical research within the department as well as the greater MGH and HMS community.

Principal Duties:

  • The Bioinformatics Research Specialist II will work closely with investigators to answer key biological questions, with the emphasis on genome-scale data analyses. Under the minimal supervision of Director of Bioinformatics, this person will be responsible for independently driving the computational component of collaborative research, understand the logic of a biomedical project, largely independently find creative quantitative solutions to advanced biomedical problems, and implement these solutions in a robust and rigorous manner.
  • The role will have many opportunities to engage in team problem solving, data analysis, and software development. This specialist will be responsible for everyday communication with wet-lab collaborators, understanding their immediate biomedical questions, and translating them into computational concepts and solutions. This person will also be responsible for a clear and concise communication of his/her Bioinformatics results to wet-lab biomedical researchers.
  • Act as a key code contributor to a shared computational infrastructure and will be expected to meet the high software development standards.
  • Will perform independent research and testing of best available existing computational methods, share these methods and expertise with other group members, and serve as a knowledge resource to collaborators seeking advice about the best tool for a particular problem.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Strong scientific curiosity and initiative
  • Advanced understanding of the logic and principles of wet-lab biomedical research
  • Ability to work very independently
  • Advanced experience with driving computational component in large-scale biomedical collaborations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Expertise in genomic data analysis – particularly ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, polymorphism discovery, and other NGS methods
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex statistics
  • Expertise working in Unix/Linux environments
  • Experience with Perl, Python, or other scripting languages
Education:
  • Masters degree required in computational biology, bioinformatics, cell biology, or a related field.
  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, cell biology, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in bioinformatics required.
