BIOINFORMATICS SPECIALIST/RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Civil and Environmental Engineering, to join an interdisciplinary academic lab that studies microbial ecology, with a focus on marine cyanobacteria and the phage that infect them.  Responsibilities include working both independently and collaboratively with lab members to define a set of user needs for accessing, querying, and analysing data; organizing diverse datasets and associated metadata for inclusion into a relational database; updating, developing, and testing pipelines for analyzing genomic, transcriptomic, and metagenomic data; developing and testing Web-based data analysis tools and user interfaces; and working with a software engineer at the Joint Genome Institute to integrate datasets into a novel Web-based resource for data integration, analysis, and display. REQUIRED:  a master’s or Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, biology, or related field; experience with database-driven website development and relational databases, e.g., MySQL; at least two years of experience working with large-scale bioinformatics data sets; solid knowledge of bioinformatics analysis methods, available tools, and data repositories; proficiency with the UNIX environment; expert-level knowledge of at least one scripting language, e.g., Perl or Python; and good organizational, communication, and multitasking skills.  Must be comfortable communicating across fields within the biological sciences and computational biology and working with database experts and software engineers in a dynamic and collaborative environment.  Experience with marine systems and/or cyanobacterial genomes is a plus, as is experience implementing web-based data visualization tools.  Experience with metagenomic data sets, transcriptomics, and large-scale DNA sequencing data would be particularly valued.  Job #11516 9/5/14 MIT is an equal employment opportunity employer.
