The incumbent will work in the Residue Chemistry and Predictive Microbiology Research Unit. The mission of the Residue Chemistry and Predictive Microbiology Research Unit is to develop innovative, highly effective, efficient, and robust methods of chemical analysis, predictive microbiological models and intervention technologies to mitigate risks, enhance quality, extend the shelf-life of raw and ready-to-eat foods, and transfer these technologies to stakeholders to ensure a safe and high quality food supply.

KEY REQUIREMENTS You must be a US Citizen or US National Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Svc., or exempt Subject to favorable adjudication of a background investigation Successful completion of a one-year probationary or trial period DUTIES: Back to top Actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, common to the assigned area of work Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to meet the needs of the research project Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment Searches for literature pertinent to area of research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records Keeps detailed records of experimental data Tabulates and analyzes data using computer and software packages Maintains inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, etc., prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological)

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Back to top To Qualify at the GS-05 Level:

Specialized Experience: At least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience are: assisting with research in microbiology (i.e., immunology, virology, bacteriology, etc.) or molecular biology; assisting with computer-based bioinformatics techniques for DNA and RNA sequencing; and collecting, tabulating, analyzing and summarizing data using computers, word processing, and statistical analysis software. (Must show how you meet specialized experience in your resume.)

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, food science, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics or other closely related field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities required by this position. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the study of microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, virology or genetics. Note: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

Combination: Applicants may qualify based on an appropriate combination of successfully completed education and experience. To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the education listed above; then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.
