Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Cancer Bioinformatician to join Breast Cancer Research Bioinformatics Group in the Breast Cancer Now Centre in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Now Unit at Kings College London (KCL), both directed by Professor Tutt. Our goal is to perform cutting-edge bioinformatics analyses and data-mining in collaboration with experimental investigators at the centre identifying new molecular markers of breast cancer. Resultant markers will be examined by co-investigators at the centre and at the clinical trials unit of the ICR.

You will work among a team of inter-disciplinary bioinformaticicans who are experts in NGS-data analysis, machine learning and software development; and therefore offering unique training opportunities. Your work will focus on the development and validation of hypotheses, and implementation of stand-alone bioinformatics tools enabling discovery of molecular markers of breast cancer. The work will include application of existing tools and method development using in-house (as well as publicly available) next generation sequencing datasets such as Exome, Targeted and Whole genome sequencing and RNA sequencing datasets. Additional experience in phosphoproteomic platform or kinome activity analyses will be an advantage. These datasets will require strong analytical skills to perform integrated analysis and visualisation of complex multi-omic datasets. You will have opportunities to create/optimise computational pipelines and develop new methods for the analysis and interpretation of big data in breast cancer. You will work closely with experimental biologists and hence it is essential to be able to effectively communicate your findings to biologists and clinicians.

Applicants should hold a degree in a computational subject, have programming and scripting experience, and must have basic knowledge of biology. It is essential to hold a post-graduate qualification in bioinformatics/biostatistics/computational biology or have gained significant experience within bioinformatics/biostatistics role/s. The starting salary is within the range of £32,638 to 44,156 p.a. inclusive, based on relevance of skills and experience. The position will be offered on a fixed-term contract of with an end date of 31st July 2020.

Additional Info:
The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment. Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally.

The Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre at the ICR is the first centre in the UK entirely devoted to breast cancer research and its goal is to advance research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Formerly known as The Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre, at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, it is located in state-of-the-art laboratory space, with excellent core facilities and funding. The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. Vacancy Description
