Job Description:
Calico is seeking a strong computational biologist / bioinformatics specialist to join a small, world-class team that works in close collaboration with some of the world’s best life scientists so as to achieve ground-breaking discoveries regarding aging and age related diseases. In doing so, you will help build and develop a new team in a company that is both a nimble startup but also has a firm financial footing.

As a member of the Computational Biology team you will work closely with machine learning experts, software developers, and scientists to understand the analytical needs of our scientists. You will be able to use and further develop our repository of powerful and scalable analytical tools that can help derive unique insights from data produced by Calico, by Calico’s collaborators, and from publicly available sources. Relevant data will span multiple organisms (from yeast to human), scales (from entire organisms to molecules), data modalities (from physiology to sequencing to imaging to free text), and time scales (from single time points to continuous time series).

Requirements:

• 6+ years of experience in computational biology and/or data analysis, including at least 2 years of hands-on work experience with real data (either in an academic environment or in industry)

• Strong coding skills in at least one relevant programming language (Python, R, Matlab, C++, etc.) and in SQL databases

• Experience working with more than one type of biological or health data (e.g., RNAseq, genetic sequences, proteomics, imaging, physiological data, etc.)

• Experience in several of the following areas: data visualization, biological system modeling, machine learning, big data analytics, or advanced statistics

• Track record of effective collaboration on complex projects involving partners with very diverse backgrounds

• Detail-oriented mindset, including experience thinking through artifacts in biological data and appropriate experimental design

• Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing

• Ability to work independently and deliver excellent results

• A strong desire to help make the world a better place
