Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Biological Systems and Engineering Division has an opening for a Computational Biologist Postdoctoral Scholar. This position will be part of the Host Engineering group led by Dr. Aindrila Mukhopadhyay, and part of the Biofuel and Bioproducts Division at the Joint BioEnergy Institute. JBEI recently received funding as a Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Research Centers (BRC) and seeks to address key challenges in developing robust and scalable microbial processes to produce biofuels and bioproducts from renewable carbon sources. The Host Engineering group will examine and understand microbial physiology during expression of heterologous or non-natural biosynthetic pathways and in industrially relevant conditions. You will be involved in using systems biology methods, functional genomics and biosensors to examine the phenotypic drift in engineered strains during subculturing and transition across growth media and scales. You will engineer the microbial host strain, pathways and genetic control systems, to maintain high production parameters for longer durations.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop a suite of genetic control systems and biosensors than work efficiently in the aromatic metabolizer P. putida, the main microbial host being used at JBEI.
  • Develop high throughput assays to evaluate strain physiology during scale up and other industrially relevant growth conditions (growth media containing different carbon sources, fed batch, higher scales).
  • Conduct a suite of systems biology and functional genomics experiments to generate a model for P. putida physiology across key industrially relevant growth conditions.
  • Increase the strain capacity maintain high productivity for longer periods of time.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and assist with the development of funding proposals and patents.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed. Ensure that others could duplicate results.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Responsible for periodic reports to the director of the project, participation in group meetings.
  • Participate in training research assistants and assisting others in the lab who require guidance with computational methods and data analysis.
  • Take responsibility of a key piece of equipment or lab area.
  • Maintain an electronic lab notebook, maintain appropriate records and manage data.
  • Provide detailed six monthly reports that can be used as part of manuscript for peer reviewed journals.
What Is Required:
  • Recent Ph.D in Computational biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related area.
  • Expert knowledge in bioinformatics and computational tools to analyze and model systems biology and high throughput assay data.
  • Experience in functional genomics, synthetic biology, gene regulation and stress response in bacteria.
  • Knowledge in handling microbes such as P. putida including growth, culturing, transformation, gene manipulation, creation of expression systems and protein purification.
  • Ability to conduct original work that meets the milestones of a larger project and scientific program.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with scientific journal writing submissions and ability to write above average reviews and articles for submission.
  • Experience with equipment like bioreactors, liquid handling systems, cell sorters and FACS.
