Job Description:
The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Specialist in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics to conduct bioinformatics research under Dr. Vaughn Cooper.

The Cooper Laboratory generates and analyzes a wide range of genomic and transcriptomic data related to bacterial evolution during infections and in experimental laboratory and animal systems. Applicants must be proficient in both Python and R. Applicants are also expected to be familiar with Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu) environments. Moreover, applicants must be familiar with shell scripting and performing analyses in high-performance computing environments. Experience with job schedulers like PBS and SLURM is a plus. This position provides an outstanding opportunity to gain expertise in high-throughput genomics and make intellectual contributions to projects supported by NIH, NSF, and NASA.

Education Required: Master's

Minimum Related Experience Level Required: 2-3 years experience

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position:

  • MS in computational biology, bioinformatics, biological science, or equivalent work experience.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both R and Python. Exposure to other object-oriented programming languages including Perl, Ruby are Java is preferred. Experience with basic Linux systems administration experience is a plus.
