Job Description:
Department of Energy’s (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for a Computational Biologist Research Scientist. We are looking for a talented, highly motivated candidate with a strong background in microbiology and bioinformatics to join the Single Cell Group. This role will be expected to perform large-scale phylogenomics of bacterial and archaeal genomes, as well as using Nucleocytoplasmic large DNA virus (NCLDV) genomic data, perform horizontal gene transfer analyses and metabolic reconstructions. You are expected to be familiar with single-cell sequence data, work independently, and contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers.

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for large-scale phylogenomics of analyses of bacterial and archaeal genomes, as well as using NCLDV genomic data, based on different sets of marker genes.
  • Contribute to research as part of a large multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform horizontal gene transfer analyses and metabolic reconstructions on large datasets.
  • Utilize scripting language(s) and apply standard bioinformatics tools and pipelines for the analysis of genomic and metagenomic data.
  • Work in a high-performance computing environment and interact with a team of computer scientists, software developers and postdoctoral researchers to develop new methods and tools for large-scale metagenome data analysis.
  • Present updates at group meetings and at scientific conferences, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Develop software for the organization and handling of metagenomic data and automation of analytical procedures.
  • Support the development of user interface for navigation and data comparisons across thousands of genomic and metagenomic samples.
What is Required:
  • PhD or equivalent experience in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline.
  • Experience in analysis of microbial genomes and metagenomes is essential with a proven track record in this area reflected in recent publications.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of bioinformatics tools for sequence similarity search, multiple sequence alignment, profile search, clustering and phylogenetic analyses using ribosomal genes and conserved marker genes is required.
  • Proven experience in methods and tools for next-generation sequencing, single-cell genomics, metagenome assembly and binning, and genome reconstruction.
  • Experience in a scripting language (Perl, Python) required, knowledge of Unix tools, relational databases and R is desirable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to independently carry out high-quality research with tenacity and creativity.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tools for microbial ecology studies.
  • Experience in or familiarity with statistical analysis is desired.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on December 1, 2017.
