Job Description:
The UT Joint Institute for Computational Sciences and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Information Sciences Research is seeking a Big Data Engineer to join our interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

As a Big Data Engineer, you will be an integral part of a team tackling the most challenging and impactful research in areas such as health care, informatics, and bioinformatics. ORNL’s collaborative environment will also provide you with the opportunity to work with and prepare large, hetereogeneous data sets for analysis on cutting-edge high-performance computing via the laboratory’s Titan supercomputer, currently the nation’s most powerful system for open science. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Big Data Engineer you will be responsible for:

• Designing, implementing, and evaluating highly scalable data analytics products and integrating algorithms into working solutions.

• Implementing the full lifecycle of big data operations, including the collection, refinement, organization, and preparation of large datasets for analysis using state-of-the-art solutions.

• Participating in national and international forums for the development of significant new concepts or novel approaches.

• Developing technical solutions for healthcare, information operations, knowledge discovery, and forensic data analysis.

• Authoring peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and presenting at top conferences.

• Participating in proposal development aimed at securing both internal and external funding.

• Researching and evaluating the state-of-the-art data and information management technologies.

• Working on a variety of data assignments and collaborating with scientists and engineers to produce reliable data analytic products and systems.

• Working in both classified and unclassified settings and in a wide variety of applied areas.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

• M.S. in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or closely related field.

• 2+ years of experience in big data research and development, including experience in developing data-oriented platforms and solutions on scalable, parallel processing platforms.

• 1+ years of experience with HDFS, Spark, and related tools and libraries.

• 2+ years of experience with Java, Python or Scala.

• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a preplacement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or closely related field.

• Experience with parallel and big data mining and machine learning frameworks.

• Experience in health and life sciences domains.
