Job Description:
The Computational Biology team is seeking an intern to analyze omics data for tumor indications. This includes the opportunity to apply machine learning techniques on complex clinical and non-clinical information. The individual will work within Halozyme SOP’s, guidelines and standards to always ensure data integrity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

These may include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and analyze complex biological data sets
  • Build gene sets focused on tumor biology
  • Program in Python or R, with appropriate documentation
  • Perform EDA, statistical analysis, clustering, and classification
  • Visualize and communicate results
  • Present data findings and analysis to internal teams
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES RECOMMENDED:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics, M.S. or PhD. preferred
  • Candidate must be skilled in at least R or Python, and preferably comfortable with machine learning techniques
  • Bioinformatics experience in gene expression/RNAseq analysis is highly desired
  • Experience with clustering is also highly encouraged
  • Experience with image analysis is a plus
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Equipment: PC, scanners, facsimile machine, voice mail and e-mail systems, and common office machines, or ability to be trained. Knowledge of other equipment required: N/A

Software Knowledge : Windows, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), Adobe. Knowledge of other software required/database platform knowledge: R and/or Python (including data analysis libraries)

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

The position will interact internally with members of the Translational Medicine team and potentially other departments in cross functional teams. As permitted, may work with external contributors.

EFFORT REQUIRED/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Physical Activities : On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. The physical demands described above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and responsibilities of this job. Laboratory Activities, if applicable: Biology and chemical laboratory environments experience needed. Environmental health and safety requirements also apply.
