Job Description:
UT Southwestern Medical Center is currently expanding its IT infrastructure to meet the big data challenge in biomedical research. As part of this activity the institution has built a state-of the art high-performance computing infrastructure that includes an HPC cluster containing conventional and GPU-based nodes for parallel computing, large-scale data storage, and integration of HPC with high-performance desktop workstations. We have an opening for a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our highly-dynamic research team as an HPC Computational Scientist. Under the mentorship of the director of IT operations, you will work on the ongoing operations of the system and provide user support for high-end computational projects. The position will include specific responsibilities for scientific web application development, working to provide our community of users with easy access to the capabilities of our systems. The ideal applicant will also have opportunities to work with a range of HPC systems and technologies such as compute clusters, parallel file systems, high-speed interconnects, GPU-based computing, and database servers.

Job Duties:

1.Support faculty and students in adapting computational strategies to the specific features of the HPC infrastructure. Working with a range of systems and technologies such as compute cluster, parallel file systems, high speed interconnects, GPU-based computing and database servers.

2.Develop software and methods to explore, analyze and visualize biological data sets including genomic, imaging and protein structure data.

3.Participate in the design and execution of collaborative research studies in biomedical informatics.

4.Train users on the application and usage of computational systems to help accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.

**Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field and three (3) years of scientific software development/analysis. Experience with HPC is a strong plus. Master's or PhD preferred. Will consider demonstrated success in publishing computational science results in lieu of experience.

Preferred Technical Requirements:

-Experience developing and maintaining multi-user web applications (MVC architectures, database back ends etc.)

-Fluent in a common web programming language (python, ruby, perl, etc.) - python preferred, but not essential.

-Linux system administration experience, with willingness to learn aspects of HPC administration.

-Working knowledge of computer architecture, storage, and networking concepts.

Additional Desirable Skills: The following skills are not requirements of a successful applicant, but candidates with these skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

-Experience working within scientific research projects.

-Database management experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL)

-Experience with highly parallel, clustered, or supercomputing systems

-Workflow management system experience.

-Technical documentation and delivery of user training

-Experience with parallel file systems such as GPFS and Lustre.

Other Requirements:

-A bachelor's degree in computer science or related field is preferred.

-Strong oral and written English communication skills are preferred.

-Ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.

-Willingness to work off-hours when needed is preferred.
