Job Description:
If you have experience providing expert technical direction, consultation, and advice on state-of-the-art software applications engineering research and development methodology; analysis of system requirements; and conceptual design of computer systems through analysis of software requirements and network architecture, AND you want to play a significant role in a dynamic organization, then consider becoming a Computer Scientist with the NIH.

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

This position is located in the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT). CBIIT provides and advocates for the appropriate use of data science, informatics, and information technology to accelerate the NCI mission to prevent, detect, treat, or cure cancer. The Computer Scientist is responsible for developing new biomedical software of a foundational nature and advising CBIIT senior management on the status of software technologies and recommending new and creative scientific and technical direction for new projects.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

This position is located in the Scientific and Statistical Computing Core (SSCC) of the NIMH Intramural Research Program. The Core develops and implements methods for the analysis and display of brain image time series and establishes computer programs that are widely used within the NIMH intramural labs and branches. The Computer Scientist is responsible for designing and developing major components of a large computer software package for the analysis and visualization of functional brain mapping research data.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing scientific technical planning, direction, and guidance on internal and external state-of-the-art complex biomedical software engineering projects on various software development methodologies.
  • Serving as a Project Leader on software engineering and documentation projects for systems that enable investigators to assemble and integrate multifaceted data to produce scientific information and understanding.
  • Serving as a liaison with user organizations and technical information specialists, including both government and contractor staff, and with management staff of various OD and intramural and extramural offices of the NIH.
  • Serving as a Project Officer in the acquisition of equipment, software, and services contracts needed to design, develop, deploy, and support the professional documentation of NIH systems.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify for a Computer Scientist, GS-1550 position you must meet the following Occupational Requirements:

Completion of a bachelor's degree in computer science.

OR

Completion of a bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

In addition, in order to qualify at the GS-14 level, you must:

Have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing technical direction, and guidance on state-of-the-art software projects; developing software to support end user applications; assessing the technical performance and effectiveness of new software applications; developing statements of work for bioinformatics contracts and reviewing contract deliverables for technical quality and conformance to the statement of work; and serving as a liaison between scientific program staff and the technical, support, and policy offices, and user organizations on these issues.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
