Job Description:
Put your data engineering skills to use supporting our rapidly expanding informatics division in supporting high-throughput data processing and management systems. This is an opportunity to learn bioinformatics and use your expertise to help power cutting-edge scientific research to apply genomic discoveries to the clinical care of patients with diseases such as cancer, ALS, Alzheimer’s, and inflammatory diseases. No prior experience in genome biology is required.

The Data Engineer will support our rapidly expanding software engineering division. The ideal candidate will be a positive, enthusiastic team player with experience developing solutions (software, methods, analyses, reports) for large-scale data analysis. Job duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collaborate with bioinformatics scientists, IT, users, and stakeholders to define requirements and specifications for data analysis workflows, accessing and managing scientific data, and data presentation
  • Prototype, develop, deploy, document, and support production-quality, fault-tolerant, high-performance software solutions focused on data analysis and management
  • Develop expertise in the scientific and computational resources of the Center
  • Participate in the management of NYGC's large scale automated data pipelines, including analysis and transport
  • Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
Required Skills:

  • BS in computer science, mathematics, or related field; or 4 years of directly-aligned field experience
  • 3 years of Linux experience
  • Ability to work independently to deliver quality methods, code, and analyses under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work with colleagues of various backgrounds (e.g. software engineering, genome science, wet lab)
  • Proficiency in Python or Java
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with version control and source code management systems (e.g. git)
  • Familiarity with modern web development for data presentation is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work directly with customers to understand their needs and translate those into actionable software and analysis requirements
  • Outstanding time management skills and attention to detail
  • Must be able to diligently and clearly document work, including: tasks, methods, processes, and analyses
  • Ability to make decisions with incomplete information and produce results in a timely fashion
  • Ability and desire to learn new skills and techniques
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, start-up like environment.
