The Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) in the Mailman School of Public Health (MPSH) at Columbia University - one of the world's most advanced academic centers focused on microbial surveillance, discovery and diagnosis (https://www.mailman.columbia.edu/research/center-infection-and-immunity) has an immediate opening for a Data Manager to join a team of researchers working on understanding the role of infectious and immune factors in the development of brain disorders across the life course. Under the supervision of Dr. Mady Hornig, Director of Translational Research at CII and Associate Professor of Epidemiology at MSPH, who specializes in research on gut-brain-immune interactions in autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Pediatric Autommune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infection (PANDAS), mood disorders, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and cognitive aging, the incumbent will be responsible for preparation of quality-controlled data sets comprising clinical and biological data from cases and controls across several large projects and will:

  • Design, prepare and/or restructure, process, manage, document and validate analytic data sets for ongoing studies of brain disorders under the direction of the PII, including quality control of existing data sets; preparation of data dictionaries; merging clinical, questionnaire and laboratory data as required, both on local secure computers and within project-specific accounts on secure cloud-based servers; documentation of syntax and procedures; and preparation/restructuring of data sets as needed for application of advanced analytical tools by project investigators, biostatisticians and bioinformaticians at CII and collaborating sites - 40%
  • Perform basic and advanced statistical analyses and prepare statistical reports, under the supervision of the PII, and in collaboration with biostatisticians and other project investigators based at CII and elsewhere - 20%
  • Execute quality control measures for raw immunoassay data using standardized procedures, including application of existing, customized software programs; rewriting syntax to refine existing software programs as needed; coordinating re-runs of assays with laboratory staff as necessary; and preparing data sets for analysis - 10%
  • Design figures, graphs and tables for inclusion in manuscripts, grant applications and presentations - 10%
  • Assist in monitoring progress of projects, including organizing work flow for and collecting raw data sets from laboratory staff, preparation of Standard Operating Procedures and project-specific summaries, and coordinating scientific meetings with team members at Columbia and collaborating institutions - 10%
  • Curate and track biological sample shipments and data related to biological sample transfer and inventory, including processing, aliquoting and sample storage - 5%
  • Perform other related duties as assigned - 5%
Minimum Qualifications for Grade:

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training and experience in computer science, informatics/ bioinformatics, statistics, biology, or mathematics. Three years of experience in working with large, complex data sets and in use of SPSS and R are mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's degree or higher plus three years of related experience in managing large databases that include laboratory and clinical data and programming experience in SPSS, SAS, R and MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages, such as Shell, Python, Perl.
