Position Title: Data Scientist and Database Developer

Reporting: Functional reporting to Dr. Conrad Stack (Plant Science, Chocolate Science & Technology).
Purpose of Role
The Plant Breeding group within the Global Chocolate division of Mars Incorporated is responsible for analyzing the data sets produced by the cacao breeding and genetics research initiatives at Mars. Data sets consist of phenotypic and genotypic observations from the tree crop Theobroma cacao , which are located at experimental field sites around the world, as well as data on the environmental conditions at some of these sites.

The Developer will be responsible for managing the development of a data storage solution and web application for the storage, retrieval and analysis of genotype, phenotype and climate data from on-going research trials and demonstration plots. She/he will need to collect specifications and use cases from research scientists, data analysts, data users and typists working with Mars and will be responsible in part for managing the software’s design, implementation and continued maintenance.

Ultimately, the purpose of this role will be to facilitate our research on cacao genetics and agronomy by improving the quality of our software tools and data analyses platforms, helping to improve the repeatability of our work, and communicating important findings among key internal stakeholders and the larger research community.

Principal Accountabilities

The key accountabilities of the role include:
Work with cacao geneticists, field researchers and other stakeholders to design an analytically-focused database interface that will store a combination of structured and unstructured data. Data will include phenotypes collected over irregular time series, different sets of SNP genotypes for different trees, environmental conditions (e.g., soil moisture, rainfall), pedigrees, and details about the different field trials, past and present.

Implement a data storage solution and a web interface / api for our data sets that is flexible enough to account for future changes we might make in our data collection protocols.
Contribute to the development of internal R, python, and other software packages. Work with end users to consistently improve the stability and functionality of the software, releasing updates at regular intervals.
Release software updates regularly.

Proactively work with stakeholders to determine features or functionality that would speed up the pace of their own research.

Work with selected end users acting as beta testers to consistently improve the stability and functionality of the software.

Keep other lab members up-to-date on the current functionality or features of software tools through seminars or tutorials.

Proactively and cooperatively communicate with management by keeping them informed of results and potential problems, as well of solutions to them.

Manages or co-manages interns, short-term contractors or other collaborators that might work on the project.

Excellent code documentation habits.
An interest in data visualization, a familiarity with cloud computing tools, experience working in life sciences are pluses.

None at the present time.
Geographical and Office Considerations
Based in Miami at the MARS-USDA station.
Approximately 5—10% of work time travelling to meet with end users or visit cacao fields.
