Job Description:
Calico is seeking a world-class data scientist / researcher to develop novel algorithms and build software tools to address problems in analysis and interpretation of complex, multi-modal biomedical data sets in a broad range of projects related to aging and aging-related diseases. The problems that you will tackle will require methods that transcend the state of the art. Many involve new types of biological data, new types of questions, data at a scale such that the relevant methods and tools have yet to be developed, or the integration of data across multiple modalities. The data you will explore will span multiple organisms (from yeast to human), scales (from molecules to entire organisms), data modalities (from sequencing to imaging to physiology), and time scales (from single time points to long-term time series). You will need to come up with new and innovative algorithms for data analysis, visualization, and interpretation, and to implement them in a scalable and reusable form.

In this role, you will be a key member in a range cross-functional efforts that involve engineers, biomedical scientists, and computational biologists. You will also be joining and helping form the culture for a new team in a company that is both a nimble startup but also has a firm financial footing.

Position requirements:

-6+ years of experience in data analysis, including at least 3 years of hands-on work experience with real data (either in an academic environment or in industry)

-Strong coding skills and substantial experience coding in at least one of Python, C/C++, or Java

-Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including familiarity with state-of-the-art methods in ML and/or advanced statistics, as well as significant experience in coming up with and implementing novel algorithms independently

-Experience developing robust, reusable ML or data analysis tools and familiarity with current large-scale data processing technologies

-Track record of effective collaboration in a cross-functional environment with people of diverse backgrounds

-PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

-Knowledge of biology and/or experience in processing biological data is a plus but not required
