Position: Director of Bioinformatics What you can expect:
- Lead the Bioinformatics and IT team for the Americas
- Work as both an individual contributor and cross-functional team member on both customer and R&D based projects
- Resolve data analysis and interpretation issues associated with NGS data for both customers and internal teams
- Collaborate on the design, development and validation of NGS analysis and reporting software with both customers and internal teams
- Present and interact with customer IT and Bioinformatics teams at both a support and project based level
- Support the commercial team on both pre & post-sales basis as it pertains to the NGS data workflow
- Willingness to travel 20% of the time within the US and Canada
- Reports to the President & CEO Vela Diagnostics Americas
- PhD or MS degree in molecular biology, bioinformatics, computational biology or related field
- At least five years of directly related experience in analyzing and interpreting NGS data from both RNA & DNA starting material
- Experience in Python, C/C++ or Java programming, Perl and R is a plus
- Hands-on experience with sequence analysis tools (e.g. Blast, GATK, Primer3, etc); an excellent understanding of genomic databases and their annotations (GenBank, RefSeq, ENSEMBL, dbSNP, UCSC genome browser); demonstrated computer skills in a UNIX environment
- Excellent understanding of the biology behind genotyping, gene expression profiling, comparative genomics and genetic mapping, and an appreciation of the use of statistical methods and mathematical models in the interpretation of biological data is highly desirable
- Experience with qPCR assay design, NGS primer design for amplicon sequencing, WGS design & experience is highly desirable
- Knowledge of microbial genomes, evolution or comparative genomics background
- Strict attention to details as demonstrated by the ability to create professional, customer facing reports and presentations
- Ability to prioritize work for success
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly across multi-disciplinary teams
