Additional Info:
The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) is a leading hub for computational biology, translational bioinformatics, and precision medicine. Based at the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus, we are part of a vibrant community of scientists, physicians, and engineers whose goal is to advance the boundaries of knowledge and improve patient care. The working environment combines the best features of a startup (fast pace, flexibility, flat hierarchies) with those of one of the leading medical schools (excellent benefits, outstanding opportunities for learning, great resources, name recognition).

The Projects:

The People-Powered Medicine program is an initiative to capture a variety of healthcare, biometric, social and genomic data from a growing set of volunteers into a unified data warehouse. With a broader view into the life of the volunteers the project aims to expand the identification and description of human diseases. Participants in the program will use our homegrown web application as their point of engagement. Through it they will submit data, link their social media accounts, link an array of wearable device accounts and receive communications from the project team.

The Undiagnosed Disease Network (UDN) is also a research program where individuals apply to have their medical mysteries solved by a global team of doctors and scientists. Here the Tech Core is responsible for the UDN Gateway web application that serves both applicants and clinicians by managing many aspects of the clinical workflow. National Institutes of Health Common Fund supports the UDN, which consists of a Coordinating Center at Harvard Medical School, seven national Clinical Sites, and two Sequencing Cores. Together these sites aim to: (1) provide answers for patients with undiagnosed diseases from around the world; (2) generate new knowledge about disease mechanisms; (3) assess the application of new approaches to phenotyping and the use of genomic technologies; and (4) identify potential therapeutic targets, if possible.

This role will primarily focus on maintaining and enhancing these existing applications. As we identify new areas where we can share what we’ve developed we’ll expand them out to larger audiences.

The Technologies:

We are primarily a Python shop and most of our projects utilize the Django framework. Almost all of the infrastructure from our projects comes via AWS scripted with boto. We are always looking to learn and adopt new technologies when they meet our business needs.

This is a 12-month grant-funded position.

This posting is a grade 57 and does not require as much competence and experience as the requirements listed on Requisition #43774BR, Senior Full-Stack Developer, grade 58. Only one of these requisitions will be filled. The grade will depend on the incumbent's skills and experience.

EEO Statement

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other characteristic protected by law.
