Job Description:
This is a full-time post offered on a 3 year fixed term contract with a two year possible extension.

Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

The Beacon is looking to recruit a Technologist in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology who will work with a wide range of individuals within the Beacon, aligned Faculties and Schools, and research centres. The role holder will develop novel research solutions to support the research of the beacon research community. Particular priorities are in the areas of genomics, genetics/GWAS and microbiome analysis although researchers with experience in other relevant areas are encouraged to apply. The post holder is expected to show capability to both apply existing software and also develop novel solutions to allow insight and interpretation of complex biological data. Main responsibilities will include:

  • Analysing a range of data using a range of bioinformatics techniques and approaches
  • Development of novel software solutions for the Beacon Research Community
  • Writing manuscripts and involvement in the development of research output
  • Assist with developing an active user community, by contributing to seminars and networking events, encouraging best practices are adopted, sharing knowledge and expertise, and by providing technical support, problem-solving, training opportunities and coaching sessions
  • Maintain an awareness of technical developments, tools and ideas in bioinformatics. including attending seminars, technical briefings, conferences and technical groups
Applicants must meet the essential criteria:
  • Minimum BSc (or equivalent) in an appropriate science
  • Extensive experience of a programming language R, python or Perl
  • Ability to work comfortably in a range of computer environments including Unix/Linux
  • Proven ability to carry out independent advanced bioinformatics analysis
  • Experience in a variety of bioinformatics tools and software
  • Record of multi-disciplinary collaboration
  • Ability to work on diverse projects in a range of disciplines in bio-medical science
