Job Description:
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Bioinformatics within GOSgene at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed and highly motivated individual to become part of a multidisciplinary research initiative aiming to combine genomic and molecular phenotype information to provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of rare diseases. We are particularly interested in indivudals with expertise in the processing and analysis of next generation sequencing data (whole genome sequencing and RNAseq), with an interest in the development of computational methods and tools for processing NGS and multi omics data and implementing them in a scientific context. The post-holder will be a key member of the data analysis team involved with the processing, analysis and integration of distinct next generation sequencing and multiple ‘omics molecular phenotype data. The main aim of the programme is to identify the underlying pathogenic causes of rare diseases as well as clinical diagnostic markers of treatment outcome or disease severity/complication. The post offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative computational and statistical methods to fully exploit large scale patient orientated biological datasets. The position is funded for 3 years in the first instance by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust and University College London. Applicants will ideally hold an MSc and several years experience or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science or equivalent, or in a biological science with demonstrated experience in computational and statistical analysis. Proficiency with at least one high-level programming language and/or appropriate scripting languages and statistical data analysis tools is required. A background in human biology or previous experience tackling biological questions in relation to human disease is beneficial but not essential.
