Job Description:
We're looking for an innovative Genomics Automation Scientist to streamline assembly of complex genomes to enable our breeding pipeline and development of the next-generation of biotechnology products. In this role, you will assemble and analyze genomes from a range of crops and develop bioinformatic pipelines that will be automated within our cloud analytics platform. You will be on the cutting edge of bioinformatics technology by building tools that rapidly curate and analyze high-dimensional, complex sequencing datasets. Wherever possible, you will be encouraged to present and publish results and contribute code to public repositories.

Role and Responsibility:

  • Provide assembly and analysis support across a broad range of eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms.
  • Develop novel algorithms and strategies to scale analysis and leverage cloud-computing resources.
  • Assist in the generation and interpretation of results from ‘omics datasets to influence business decisions.
  • Think creatively about the future of sequencing, scalable analyses, and prospecting of technologies that can help us predict the behavior of our products from genomics data.
Required Skills/Experience:
  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology or a related field; or a Masters degree in one of these fields and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • 4+ years academic or industry experience with ‘omics data and complex assemblies (including Ph.D. and postdoc research).
  • Experience with writing and testing software along with building and automating pipelines
  • Facility with the programmatic use of at least one statistical package such as R.
  • Scientific programming skills in at least one scripting or high performance language (e.g. R, Python, Julia, C, C++, Java, etc).
  • A strong commitment to producing reproducible scientific results and using version control in their coding practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn methods and technologies as necessary to meet objectives.
  • Successful experience working closely with experimental collaborators to test computationally derived hypotheses.
  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams to meet milestones and deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong publication record of research and/or software.
Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Experience working with complex sequencing datasets across multiple organisms, especially plants.
  • Experience with working in a cloud-computing environment.
  • Ability to produce and interpret the biological and business relevance of genomic data.
  • Experience using high performance or cloud computing environments such as SGE, LSF, or AWS.
  • Past laboratory experience, along with an appreciation for when to use a computational approach and when to do a physical experiment.
  • Experience acting as a liaison between experimentalists and informaticists and software engineers to generate conclusive and applicable results.
  • A highly collaborative approach, with the drive and ability to actively create new connections across the global Monsanto Technology organization.
