Job Description:
Biology is rapidly becoming a data science due to the exponential growth in high-quality biological and medical data. These data are transforming our understanding of biology and disease, but deriving valuable scientific insights requires a careful analysis and interpretation of data done in close collaboration between computational and life scientists. Calico is seeking a strong leader to grow and lead a world-class team to further develop new data analysis pipelines and bioinformatics methods to derive insights from a diverse set of data.

You and your team will collaborate closely with some of the world’s best life scientists to design new experiments, and help analyze data - both internal and external - to derive new and ground-breaking discoveries in human health. The data that your team will tackle will span multiple organisms (from yeast to human), scales (from molecules to entire organisms), data modalities (from physiology to sequencing to imaging to free text), and time scales (from single time points to continuous time series). You will develop processes to understand the computational needs of the organization and work with other leaders in the organization to help prioritize different efforts and allocate resources accordingly. You will collaborate closely with our Data Platform and Machine Learning teams as they develop new analytical tools and methods and make these tools robust and reusable. You will promulgate the use of these tools and other state-of-the-art methods across the organization, and help our scientists use those to perform robust and impactful analyses. To help support our growing needs in this area, you will also be responsible for hiring and mentoring computational biologists, and in educating others across the company regarding the challenges of analyzing biological data and the choice and use of methods and tools.

Position requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Biological Sciences, Genetics, Genomics, Computer Science, or equivalent preparation and experience
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including at least 5 years in a management role, with a track record of building and managing an innovative, high-performance team
  • Deep understanding of the issues associated with producing and interpreting diverse types of biological and/or medical data across (e.g., RNAseq, genetic sequences, proteomics, imaging, physiological data, etc.), including experience with a variety of modern data processing pipelines and analytical tools
  • Experience in high-quality software development, including familiarity with at least one relevant programming language (Python, R, C++, etc.) and with SQL databases, including in distributed and cloud environments
  • Significant experience with the application of statistical and machine learning methods, such as: regularized GLMs, Bayesian modeling, time series analysis, modern neural network architectures, and more
  • Demonstrated ability in building effective tools and products, leading the organization toward the broad adoption of these tools, and using the tools to extract impactful insights from biological data.
  • Track record of effective cross-functional collaboration on complex projects involving people with very diverse backgrounds
