Job Description:
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist is responsible for providing consulting and support to faculty, students and staff utilizing our leading edge Linux based computer cluster and associated research software, storage and scientific gateways. S/he will participate and contribute to the management, refinement of the existing service while working with the team to define a vision for future services. In addition, s/he will work with new technologies, and support eminent faculty in all departments including the new Data Intensive Science Center (DISC), a vibrant, intellectual center that will empower both research and teaching across multiple domains including Arts, Humanities and STEM. In addition, this position will interact with users from the new Paul Allen Discovery Center which is working to read and write the morphogenetic code of cell communication to create, repair anatomical shapes. This position will have access to systems with thousands of cpu/gpu cores, high performance parallel file systems, and high speed networking while working with our multi-talented team to enhance your technical, collaboration, project management, communication and user skills. As analytical, data and computational needs increase across all domains, this is one of the most exciting times to be in research computing, every day will bring new challenges and interactions.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related technical field and 3+ years of experience in technical computing. Areas of study include, but are not limited to: Scientific, engineering or computation intensive fields (Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, etc.), Information Technology (IT).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical computing and research methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience accessing, using High Performance Compute (HPC) clusters running Linux.
  • Interest in research computing software environments from both the command line and graphical user interface. This includes Linux, computing paradigms (distributed, parallel, serial computing), cpu/gpu computing and languages such as Python, C, Fortran, R.
  • Knowledge of compiling software, basic scripting, coding, etc. in support of high performance computing.
  • Dedication to creativity and innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and engage an active intellectual community, including working collaboratively and building partnerships across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated technical and innovative problem solving skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong presentation skills.
  • Interest and dedication to customer service, support, training, outreach and facilitation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Science or Engineering and 5+years of experience in technical computing.
  • Familiarity and experience with resources at private or public sector HPC research computing environments, national centers or XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment) beneficial.
  • Understanding of and experience with high performance computing from both an architecture perspective as well as daily usage, support and application level knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the continuum of research computing and scalability from desktop to HPC to cloud and grid solutions.
  • Experience with specific technologies used in research and high performance computing, data science, big data such as: Slurm, Apache Spark, Python, C, C++, Fortran, OpenACC, OpenMP, OpenMPI. Understanding of data workflow, analytics software (R, Matlab), machine/deep learning.
  • Understanding of systems architecture, scientific gateways and virtualization.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:

Occasional evening or weekend work, as well as the ability to participate in a 24x7 on call rotation for major incident support activities.
