Job Description:
The Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders is jointly sponsored by the BWH Departments of Medicine and Neurology. The mission of the division is to forge a path of discovery in sleep medicine while providing the highest standard of clinical care for patients with sleep disorders and training the next generation of leaders in sleep medicine. Since 1980, we have been conducting inpatient sleep studies, which have generated a large, diverse, and valuable dataset of longitudinal and demographic data. Researchers in the Division need to have easy access to this dataset for analysis purposes. In addition, the data needs to be well-structured, documented, and secured. The primary responsibilities of this position include implementing and managing solutions for the storage, transformation, access, visualization, documentation, and security of this dataset. The Database Manager/ IS Programmer must have demonstrated competency in one of more of the following areas of specialization while working under very general supervision: algorithm development, data analysis, pipeline software/computing development, user interface design & report development, web-based application development, database design and management. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities of this position include implementing and managing solutions for the storage, transformation, access, visualization, documentation, and security of this dataset. Working in a progressive and academic medical center, the Database Manager/ IS Programmer will design, build, and manage databases, web applications, and related tools to aid in the secure storage of sleep and circadian rhythm datasets and facilitate analysis. The successful candidate will play a central role in the evaluation of our current systems and the planning and development of future applications. More specifically, the position will have the following responsibilities: 1.Maintain and upgrade existing databases, web applications, and ETL tools. a.Design and manage databases for storing complex longitudinal sleep and circadian rhythm data. b.Build tools for accessing, merging, and loading data from diverse sources into the database. c.Build web applications to be used by our researchers to visualize data, view reports, or facilitate any other aspects of their workflow. d.Administer Oracle databases and CentOS web servers. 2.Work with cross-functional team members to recommend technical solutions and design options to address research issues and implement new capabilities. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: 1.Bachelor's degree Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or equivalent highly applicable experience, required. 2.Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in programming/analysis, bioinformatics, or computational biology, working with large datasets. a.1+ years of experience with building applications in Ruby, specifically using Ruby on Rails 4. b.Experience with Oracle and/or Postgresql Databases and SQL scripting required. c.Solid understanding of object-oriented design, n-tier architecture, and MVC is required. d.Prior experience developing robust user interfaces using jQuery, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and/or single-page web application frameworks. e.Experience in working with Git and Github for collaborating on open-source projects is strongly preferred. f.Experience programming in R (including the Shiny web framework) or equivalent is preferred. 3.Proven strong programming skills and experience in application development in both Windows and Linux environments. 4.Understanding of or interest in Biology and/or Medicine would be preferred. 5.Excellent verbal and written communication skills. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 1.Excellent attention to detail. 2.Excellent organizational and problem solving skills. 3.Strong communication skills to be able to work effectively with multidisciplinary staff, interacting with individuals at many levels of multiple institutions. 4.Solid understanding of Object oriented Concepts, web application development, MVC architecture. 5.Willingness and ability to identify new skills and technologies necessary for the job and quickly learn them. 6.Ability to work in a high-paced environment. 7.Detail oriented, analytical and problem-solving mindset. 8.Current with emerging Web Technologies.
