Shortlist Add to shortlist ApplyApplications are invited for the post of Research Fellow in Bioinformatics to join the NIHR Specialist Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health (BRC-MH). The aim of the role is to perform bioinformatics research of an international standard with the aim of developing novel diagnostics and therapeutics for mental health, using expression profiling, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, electronic health records and wearables and other approaches to identify biomarkers of progression, disease and treatment response and applying large variable datasets to translational research in mental health under the general direction of the lead for bioinformatics.
The BRC-MH, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, undertakes translational research across 7 mental disorder specific themes and 3 Cross-cutting themes. The BRC-MH received a £3m infrastructure grant from Trustees of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Guys and St Thomas’ Trust (GSTT) Charity for a ‘Nucleus’ of IT developments, bioinformatics and biostatistics to support a variety of strategically important BRC-MH research initiatives.
As part of the BRC bioinformatics group the successful candidate will be expected to perform integrative bioinformatics research of an international standard complementary to the overall research strategy of the BRC-MH. This strategy includes the use of omics (NGS and chip) clinical records mining and other approaches to identify biomarkers of progression, disease and treatment response and further understanding mental illness. Duties of the role will include the design and analysis of large variable datasets, pattern classification and mathematical/statistical modelling and programming in a variety of languages on a Linux platform. The successful candidate will have a relevant PhD and a proven track record of bioinformatics research. S/he will therefore need to be familiar with relevant tools such as R Python and/or Java.

The appointment will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications, within the Grade 6 scale, currently £32,600 to £38,896, per annum plus £2,323 per annum London Allowance.
Fixed term contract until 31 March 2017.
