Job Description:
This individual will serve the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) and its collaborative research mission with the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. The individual will be primarily responsible for preparing specifications and algorithms for human genomic sequence analysis in the Cancer Genomics Laboratory at TCH. Principal responsibilities will include installation and implementation of specific existing bioinformatics solutions for both DNA and RNA-based genomic sequencing; designing, coding, testing, and debugging of programs, and development of database solutions. A major additional task, in collaboration with other personnel, will be to custom develop a GUI front-end solution for an integrated viewer and workbench program for DNA and RNA-based genomic profiling. Other tasks and responsibilities may include advising on hardware and software decisions, and providing guidance, work direction and training to junior bioinformaticians and information systems personnel. The individual will aid in the preparation of manuscripts and proposals. In addition to adhering to the policies set forth by TCH and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the person must understand and act on the need for discretion due to the sensitive nature of research involved. Required: -Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences. -Five years experience in scientific programming with applications to genomic research or a Master's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences and three years related work experience. -Experience with Perl, Python, HTML, relational databases and SQL and programming in a UNIX/LINUX environment. Preferred: -Master’s degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences. -Experience in working with different widely used genomic analysis pipelines. -Experience with C++ and programming using UNIX/LINUX clusters.
