Job Description:
Leidos Life Sciences currently has an opening for a Life Scientist to perform research at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), Plum Island NY under a contract with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate. The overall goal of the program is to construct, test, and evaluate new sub-unit vaccine candidates for Foot-and-mouth disease virus and African swine fever virus. Research may include work with other animal viruses such as classical swine fever virus, and potentially other pathogenic and nonpathogenic animal viruses. Specific focus areas include the development of: vaccines and biological countermeasures to foot-and-mouth disease and other high consequence foreign animal diseases; diagnostic and detection tools for high-priority foreign animal, and high-consequence zoonotic, diseases and demonstrating field capability; disease risk, bioforensic threat assessment and characterization, and epidemiology capabilities. The mission is carried out in close collaboration with USDA-ARS and USDA-APHIS scientists at PIADC. The position requires daily travel to and from Orient Point, NY or Old Saybrook, CT and Plum Island aboard government-provided marine vessels.

Qualifications:
Position requirements include: 1. Scientists with a bachelor’s or master’s degrees with at least 10 credits in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Virology, Bioinformatics. 2. Preference for at least 2 years of research lab experience. 3. Biosafety level -2 or -3 lab experience is not required, but all lab work will be performed inside BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs. Individuals are required to shower out of the BSL-3 labs at the end of the day after working in bio-containment. 4. Laboratory work will include but is not limited to:- Manipulating nucleic acids (PCR, cloning, preparation of plasmids, genomic DNA, RNA isolation, etc.)
- Conducting bacterial transformation
- Transfection and viral infection of mammalian cells
- Passage of continuous cell lines and preparation of primary cells
- Various immunological techniques (generating and characterizing monoclonal antibodies, western blotting, immune-precipitation, serum virus neutralization, immunofluorescent assays, and Eli-spot)
- Designing and validation viral and bacterial decontamination regimens
- Maintenance of laboratory notebooks
