Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Microbiology Postdoctoral Scholar. We have an exciting opportunity in the area of microbial genomics, single-cell analysis, and viral ecology. We are looking for a talented, highly motivated candidate with a strong background in single-cell approaches such as microfluidics, droplet encapsulation, and/or flow cytometry, to participate in research focused on developing approaches for virus-host linkage identification. You will be expected to lead the development of innovative approaches for co-localizing viral and host genes and genomes in microbial cells, and analyze novel associations obtained from environmental samples to investigate virus-host networks and interactions. This position will be part of the Environmental Genomics group (led by Emiley Eloe-Fadrosh) and will work in close collaboration with the Micro-Scale Applications (Rex Malmstrom) and Single Cells groups (Tanja Woyke), under the supervision of Simon Roux. The incumbent will work independently, as well as contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and coordinate experimental studies of new virus-host linkage approaches.
  • Investigate new virus-host dynamics from available metagenomic datasets.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.
  • Present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.
What Is Required:
  • PhD in biology, microbiology, ecology, genomics, computational biology or a relevant related field.
  • Some experience in single-cell approaches such as microfluidics, microdroplet encapsulation, emulsion PCR, or in molecular screening through concatenation PCR.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact well with members of a multi-disciplinary research team.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead research projects involving substantial methods development independently.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to write scientific manuscripts and reports.
  • Good analytical, record-keeping and organization skills necessary for working in a laboratory environment.
  • Some experience in computational biology and genome analysis a plus.
  • Some knowledge and experience in environmental virology a plus.
