Job Description:
The Manager of R&D Informatics is responsible for successful development, optimization and execution of systems, databases and software for genetic data analysis pipelines, laboratory automations and process architecture in support of research and new product development. The Manager is an accomplished technical leader who applies extensive scientific and technical experience and business acumen to establish strategies, drive effective and high-quality lab technical work and deliver well-controlled and characterized genetics laboratory operations processes.

Reporting to the Vice President of Research and Development, the position will serve as the technical and strategic manager of Informatics for R&D projects including assay development, data analysis, statistical analysis and informatics analysis and as such, position will be the leader provide the interface to the Vice President for all R&D informatics projects.

The Manager will lead a growing team of direct reports, and must have a hands-on approach to executing the duties of the position. The position is ideal for an experienced bioinformatician looking to advance based on significant prior individual contributor experience, experience with successful product development and launch cycles, and experience with supporting R&D functionality in a cross-disciplinary clinical laboratory/R&D environment.

Required Skills:

  • The Manager will have significant direct experience in clinical laboratory assay and process development, with particular emphasis on automation of laboratory, data analysis and pipeline processes, and transition from R&D to production implementations. In addition, a strong research background with understanding of molecular genetics applications and their diagnostic laboratory implementations, combined with expertise in state-of-the-art genomic methodologies (including NGS technologies, microbiome metagenomics, Targeted sequencing, PCR applications, , etc.) working in a high performance computing environment.
  • 5+ years direct professional experience in analysis of genomic and molecular data, development of custom software and systems with the goal of generating high-quality systems and tools that advance research into successful product development
  • Responsible for the ongoing R&D of bioinformatics tools and systems for new assay development, troubleshooting and/or improvements of informatics for current assays
  • Ability to apply advanced analytics methodologies (Machine Learning, Bayesian statistics, Multivariate Analysis, Neural Networks, etc.); experience in machine learning algorithms and their application to biological problems
  • Experience integrating publicly or commercially available genetic, genomic, and pathway/network datasets with novel experimental data
  • Create and maintain databases of R&D information including NGS and lab data as well as clinical study information.
  • Excel at working in a fast-paced research environment; possess superior time management skills and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Articulate concepts through both oral presentation and written communication to different audiences
  • Direct experience in laboratory automations on multiple platforms, integrating pipelines, LIMS and automations systems
  • Strong expertise and working knowledge of genomics, especially an understanding of how to advance genomic data analysis methods into functional aspects and clinical diagnostics, and highly experienced in bioinformatics data and statistical analysis, pipelines and algorithm development
  • Demonstrated experience extracting and describing complex high dimensional data and presenting those data in a biologically meaningful context
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with scientists in related disciplines, including multi-functional department projects and collaborations, as well as non-scientific staff related to new product implementation
  • PhD +5 years’ post-graduate professional experience in Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent related discipline is required, with 5+ years’ experience in a regulated clinical genetics laboratory (CLIA/CAP) with successful commercial product launches
  • Establish and effectively drive the efficiency of projects and R&D informatics team in developing and establishing research-grade bioinformatics pipelines
  • Allocate resources to construct and implement innovative experiment designs from research topics and objectives
  • Perform analyses on large-scale sets of parallel sequencing genomic data and support R&D scientists in analyses of ongoing R&D development work
  • Present results of research to colleagues, superiors, and stakeholders.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in the field of informatics; supervise and mentor junior team members through technical and theoretical guidance
  • Develop analysis methods, databases and software to create and assess laboratory processes and data analysis
  • Manage the integration of new products with other internal functions and departments including Lab Operations and Business Technology
  • Provide expertise to R&D scientists, operations scientists, and infrastructure staff involving designing, performing, troubleshooting, analyzing and presenting experimental data
  • Scale up genetics lab processes, suggest optimizations for raw materials or components and process parameters to ensure quality is maintained during high throughput operations; use data analytics to improve operational capacity by reducing costs, improving efficiency, improving quality and throughput in bottleneck areas
  • Write and/or contribute to technical reports, SOPs, validation documentation, cost estimates, documenting development work and implementing profit improvement strategies; clearly document development activities, automations and software methods, and data analysis
  • Follow all applicable SOPs and maintain appropriate records
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
