Job Description:
Responsibilities: Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the SRA I will collect and catalogue patient samples for the Neurology Biobank using a biobanking software program. Multiple biological samples will be transported from the clinic to the research lab and processed for storage and use in research experiments. The SRA I will be responsible for retrieving, aliquoting, and preparing samples for transfer from the biobank to researchers. Strict adherence to HIPAA, CAP, and CLIA protocols regarding patient information and tracking of samples would be critical. The SRA I may also perform molecular biology experiments to support research projects investigating the genetic underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Job duties primarily may include molecular and cellular biology techniques such as bio-specimen collection and handling (including human blood and tissue); DNA/RNA extraction; generating DNA plasmids; cell culture studies; performing PCR and gel electrophoresis; conducting real-time PCR experiments; isolating protein extracts and running Western blots; primary neuronal and cell line tissue culture; and/or preparing buffers, solutions, and chemicals for lab experiments. Qualifications:
- B.S. degree or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field strongly preferred
- General working knowledge of neuroscience, molecular biology, and/or cell biology theories and principles.
- Good communication skills and ability to work well with multiple individuals.
- Ability to maintain an organized working area.
- Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to switch focus as needed.
- Excellent attention to detail, for accurate data entry and analysis.
- Good organization and time management skills. Always punctual.
- Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and new equipment, as needed.
- Ability to keep accurate and organized records of experiments, procedures, and data.
- Working knowledge of basic genetic and molecular genetic principles (e.g., genetic inheritance, DNA transcription, RNA processing etc.)
- Knowledge of basic molecular biology/cell biology/genetic techniques.
- Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Knowledge of chemistry to prepare solutions for lab experiments.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for handling chemical, biohazard, and medical waste.
- Working knowledge and ability to use computers (PC, MAC, and UNIX or related operating systems), software, and related hardware.
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing methods and analysis
- Working knowledge of bioinformatics, systems biology, and biostatistics
- Familiarity using online bioinformatic resources (e.g., Exome Aggregation Consortium database etc.) and/or related commercial products.
- Knowledge of Computer Programming (R preferred)
