Job Description:

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 9 divisions and it is representative for the laboratory medicine in the full sence of the word. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

A doctoral position is an available doctoral education project to which a PhD student is to be recruited. After the selection process the process for admission to doctoral education will commence. An admission decision will not be taken until an individual study plan has been approved by the departmental admission board.

Research group
Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Clinical Microbiology is looking for a PhD student who will work in the group headed by Associate Professor Annika C Karlsson and her collaborators studying the importance of the cellular immune system in handling human viral infections (e.g. HIV).

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
By combining new knowledge of viral and immunological patterns in clinical samples, the goal of the project is to establish the correlates of efficient immune responses (i.e. T cells) associated with control of HIV replication. Specifically, the aim is to gain a more thorough understanding of molecular mechanisms driving T cell pathogenesis in viral infections. In order to succeed we will combine cutting edge viological and immunological methodology with novel bioinformatics to characterize T cell pathogenesis and function in HIV infected individuals. A deeper understanding of the specific molecular mechanisms driving HIV-specific T cell pathogenesis will be crucial for the development of an effective HIV vaccine or cure. Our approach will also simplify identification of correlates for an effective immune response after vaccination and against any pathogen or cancer antigen. To characterize the traits of T cell pathology and functionality, all studies involved multi-parametric flow cytometry analysis. The studies will involve work with virus infected human cells, in addition to a number of immunological, virological, and molecular techniques.

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

Terms and conditions
The most common way of financial support for doctoral students at KI is doctoral grant the first year and a doctoral studentship (doctoral employment) for year 2, 3 and 4. During the time between recruitment and admission a short-term employment can be offered for up to 6 months.
