Job Description:
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Derryberry lab (https://derryberrylab.wordpress.com/) in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee. This position is part of NSF funded research on the systematics of the largely Neotropical radiation of suboscines (Aves: Tyranni). This research involves faculty from five partner institutions (LSU, AMNH, Smithsonian, KU, and MPEG), so the successful candidate will be joining a highly collaborative and productive research team. The lab is affiliated with the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and NIMBioS and the candidate will be welcome to participate in any/all of these communities.

The postdoctoral associate will be expected to contribute to (1) generating a species-level phylogeny of the 1000+ suboscine species using genomic approaches and (2) subsequent analyses intended to improve understanding of diversification in large radiations. The ideal candidate has experience in assembling and analyzing next-generation sequence data. Prior experience working on suboscines is also desirable. The Derryberry lab also has a strong interest in the tempo and mode of behavioral evolution, so candidates with an interest in exploring these types of questions in a phylogenetic context are strongly encouraged to apply. A strong publication record is preferred.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in a pertinent field. Such fields could include, but are not limited to evolutionary biology, biology, computational biology, and bioinformatics
  • Some research experience in comparative genomics (within any scientific field would qualify)
  • A basic understanding of phylogenetics
  • A basic understanding of comparative approaches
  • An interest in the evolution and diversification of birds
  • The ability to write clearly and scientifically (e.g. to produce drafts of papers for publication in scientific journals and web-based public outreach without too much oversight); evidence of successful prior publication is a plus
  • Ability to work/communicate with a multidisciplinary team
  • Willingness to help with the preparation of additional grant proposals would be a plus
