Job Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented post-doctoral scientist to develop methods for interrogating genomics, survival data, biochemical pathways and clinical data for studies on ageing. The successful candidate will join a small team within the Thornton group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK. They will work in close collaboration with Profs Linda Partridge and David Gems labs at the Institute of Healthy Ageing (IHA) at University College London and with Prof Dominic Withers at Imperial College.

Many research studies on ageing have explored the effects of different environmental stresses and gene mutations on gene expression and lifespan. However, despite this work much remains to be understood about how these gene expression changes affect the biological pathways which control lifespan in different model organisms. The successful candidate will study longevity in model organisms (worm, fly, mouse) focusing on the Insulin/Insulin-like Growth Factor and the TOR signalling pathways. (S)he will contribute to our efforts to integrate and interrogate this information in the context of longevity phenotype represented by survival data sets and our current knowledge on the pathways. We will extend these studies to consider the effects of drugs in model organisms and explore whether it is possible to extrapolate to human tissues. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of aging and their similarities in different tissues and species.

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate will have completed, or be close to finishing a PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics or Physics. (S)he should have good knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Perl/Python/Java/C/C++ and skills in R or Matlab would be useful. Experience with high-throughput data (gene expression microarrays and/or sequencing), comparative genomics and pathway analyses would be a distinct advantage.

The post-holder will be able to work effectively in a small team of bioinformaticians within the Thornton Group and collaborate effectively with experimental biologists from the labs at UCL. Strong scientific communication skills are a prerequisite, as are excellent English and interpersonal skills
