Job Description:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is recruiting for a postdoctoral fellow to be part of an exciting new research project related to the human brain and neuroscience. The position in the laboratory of Seth Ament will work at the intersection of transcriptomics, epigenomics, human disease genetics, and biostatistics. The fellow will analyze complex genomic datasets related to the mammalian brain, including large new single-cell transcriptome and epigenome sequencing datasets (scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq) that are being generated by the BRAIN Initiative and related projects. The fellow will also have opportunities to design experimental studies using stem cells and animal models to validate predictions from these genomic analyses. The fellow will collaborate locally with a team of software engineers, bioinformatics scientists, and molecular and cellular biologists. The fellow will have opportunities to interact regularly with a national network of leading neurogenetics researchers, focused on characterizing the cell types in the mammalian brain and their roles in diseases such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, Huntington’s disease, and hearing loss.

Essential Functions:

• Determine methods of statistical analysis to perform simple and sophisticated analyses, develop conclusions, and generate standard and customized reports and illustrations using statistical applications.

• Development and maintenance of software and scripts with minimal supervision

• Participation in multiple projects simultaneously involving different scientists and datasets of variable complexity. This would involve working as a member of a large-scale, multi-member team.

• Prepare oral and written presentations for consortium calls, national meetings, and peer-reviewed publications

Qualifications

Qualifications Education: PhD or equivalent degree in Bioinformatics, Neuroscience, or related field. Experience: Two years of experience in bioinformatics research and statistical analysis of biological data, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Proficiency in at least one statistical programming language such as R.

• Proficiency with at least one version control system such as git, subversion or mercurial.

• Demonstrated ability to apply methods of statistical analysis and techniques to ensure validity of data, accuracy of results, analyze findings, and present conclusions.

• Thorough knowledge of a variety of systems methods for storing, organizing and presenting large data sets.

• Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy and efficiency. This includes excellent organization and time management skills to meet project goals and schedules
