Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to offer a prestigious UKRI Innovation/Rutherford (non-clinical) Fellowship. We are looking for a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to play a crucial role in new research aligned to Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), an exciting new initiative to integrate molecular and electronic health record (EHR) data lead by the Medical Research Centre (MRC). The post holder will be based in the Human Genetics programme at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and will have access to world-leading large-scale genomic studies. This post is a UKRI Innovation Fellowship (UK nationals) or a Rutherford Fund Fellowship (non-UK nationals) and will be part of a national cohort of fellows funded by the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy fund.

This is an opportunity for the successful candidate to focus on integration and analysis of large scale EHR data with genome-characterised cohorts, increasingly enriching the genomic data with additional tiers of biomolecular traits, with the aim of transforming the practice of precision medicine.

You will work together with the community of researchers in Human Genetics at Sanger, bringing bioinformatic or data science expertise to two specific research initiatives focusing on rare and extreme phenotypes or on understanding microbial carriage.

Fellows will take advantage of our integrated multidisciplinary training, including placements in genomics, bioinformatics, clinical informatics, multi-dimensional epidemiology, biostatistics, and machine learning. Our well-established culture of cross-institutional working will enable trainees to develop and follow bold ideas in an agile manner.

Essential Skills:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biology or related subject
  • Good data analysis skills
  • Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas
  • The ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and occasionally present oral communication to large groups
  • Team player with ability to effectively prioritise, multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, including using initiative to plan research programmes
  • Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail

Additional Info:
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in partnership with the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute, and Cambridge University and associated hospitals, has applied to become a Substantive Site of HDR UK to be based at the Wellcome Genome Campus. Our vision is to transform scientific understanding of disease through integration of EHRs, genomic sequences and biomolecular traits in large cohorts, supporting novel and actionable precision medicine approaches that improve healthcare through discovery-led data science. These projects will focus on multi-disease aetiology, rare disorders, microbial carriage and methods development.

Other information:

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre and committed to training the next generation of genome scientists. Focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease and a world leader in the genomic revolution, our mission is to use genome sequences to advance understanding of human and pathogen biology in order to improve human health. We aim to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens. Our science is large-scale and organised into Programmes, led by our Faculty who conceive and deliver our science, and supported by our Scientific Operations teams responsible for all data production pipelines at the Institute.

Our Campus: Set over 125 acres, the stunning and dynamic Wellcome Genome Campus is the biggest aggregate concentration of people in the world working on the common theme of Genomes and BioData. It brings together a diverse and exceptional scientific community, committed to delivering life-changing science with the reach, scale and imagination to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

The Campus is a community of organisations working in genomic research, enterprise, education and discourse. It is home to some of the world's foremost institutes and organisations in genomics and computational biology, including the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute which is the largest organisation on Campus, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), Open Targets and Genomics England. Also located here is Connecting Science - its mission is to enable everyone to explore genomic science and its impact on research, health and society by drawing on the ground-breaking research taking place on the Campus.

Genome Research Limited is an Equal Opportunity employer. As part of our commitment to gender equality and promoting women’s careers in science, we hold an Athena SWAN Bronze Award. We will consider all qualified applicants without discrimination on grounds of disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy or maternity leave status, race or national or ethnic origin, age, religion or belief, gender identity or re-assignment, marital or civil partnership status, protected veteran status (if applicable) or any other characteristic protected by law.
