Job Description:
A postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Laboratory Medicine, Department of Pathology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, for an exciting opportunity to apply cutting-edge computational and statistical modeling to the novel Big Data field of laboratory medicine quality improvement. Under the direction of project principal coordinator Dr. Allen Bryan, de-identified datasets from medical data warehouses (MDW) will be used to study the connections between all aspects of the clinical microbiology laboratory life cycle: sample collection, identification and reporting, treatment, and patient quality metrics. The goal of our project is to measurably impact quality improvement measures in the hospital, with potentially nationwide utility. The potential candidate will be exploring novel applications of graph-network theory, Bayesian statistics, data analysis, and Big Data visualization, while also familiarizing themselves with clinical informatics formats and tools. The candidate will also have opportunities to interact with biomedical and clinical staff and interface with personnel in laboratory, clinical, and bioinformatics environments.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent degree in an informatics-related field, such as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, computer engineering, information science, or an equivalent field. Required skills include training and experience in software development, such as object-oriented programming (including MVC frameworks), web-based development (including standard tools and CMSes), version control systems, and/or experience with relational databases. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with experience in:

· Statistical analysis in R

· Use of free and/or open source software (FOSS) for complex data visualization

· Relational (SQL-like) database content and systems

· Web presentation of results via HTML5/PHP/Javascript

· Middleware interfacing with application software

· Facility with one or more of: R, Python, PHP, Java/Javascript.
